Weekly Photo Challenge: Structure

Located on a hilltop in the fertile Verde Valley, this structure was once an ancient pueblo. Tuzigoot National Monument near Clarkdale, Arizona, was home to the 12th century Sinagua Indians. Construction at Tuzigoot spanned over 300 years, from about 1100 to 1400 AD.

Don’t you just wonder what occupied the minds of the Sinagua people all those years ago? Certainly, they were not worried about whose finger was on the nuclear button or which political party’s agenda made the biggest splash in the news. I suppose they were more concerned with surviving the heat of an Arizona summer, what the length of the next growing season might be, or how to build tools to accomplish tasks more easily.

Despite the comfortable natural setting not far from the Verde River, the Sinagua left the pueblo at Tuzigoot for unknown reasons around the year 1450.

  1. What an amazing place. I guess the occupants were bothered simply by survival. Shelter, food, water, warmth/cool. If we emulated that a little and binned the greed we would go a long way to sustaining our planet and achieving a little fairness.

      1. You’re most welcome Linda, it was good to see some of your history that pre-dates ‘The Pilgrim Fathers’!! American archaeology/ancient history is I guess much harder to uncover than our history of the same time period, given that many native Americans were nomadic peoples, and thus didn’t build many permanent structures. We are certainly lucky in that respect here in Scotland, and in the rest of the UK 🙂

      2. The southwestern part of the country is rich with evidence of Native American culture. I find the cliff dwellings in Colorado and Arizona most impressive. Thanks for stopping by!

      3. I must read up more about it Linda, up until recently I knew very little about any of your history, but over the last few months I’ve been catching up on your more recent past, I hadn’t realised how much I had forgotten from school days! Lol!! But American archaeology is all new to me, and really fascinating 🙂
