The rule of thirds is a very effective photographic technique that typically makes the composition of your photos more artistically pleasing.
Supposedly, the human eye naturally gravitates to the intersection points when an image is split into thirds. In the photo below, the sky takes up two-thirds of the space horizontally and the bridge covers two-thirds of the space vertically.
Here the tower occupies the left third, with the birds in the center grid.
But as Katherine Hepburn said, “If you obey all the rules you miss all the fun”… so go ahead and have some fun by placing the subject right smack in the middle if you want to!
For Lens-Artists Challenge #197 – The Rule of Thirds
The first, second and fourth photos were taken in Budapest, Hungry; the third, in Nuremberg, Germany.
What a wonderful collection of beautiful travel photos 🙂 For every photography ‘rule’ we’re to follow as photographers, there are countless amazing photographs proving that rules are meant to be broken. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

I guess the trick is knowing when to break the rules and when not to. Thanks so much for the lovely comment.

I often shoot the same shot with and without rule-of-thirds just to decide later which I prefer. Sometimes I even turn my phone upside down just to see if it makes any difference☺️

I always take the same shot at least twice, but I have never turned my phone upside down – I should try that! Thanks!

Excellent. I love that first shot of the castle at night, each lighted in different parts of the photo.

It certainly makes more impact. How many people practise this?

Good question! The rule doesn’t instinctively come to me. I usually think about it after the first shot… then I take a second or even third shot of the same.
