On our recent road trip, we had a gorgeous view out the window of this hotel. One morning, off in the distance, a rainbow appeared after a brief rain.
We stayed for two nights at the Lindeth Howe Country House located in the Lake District of Northern England during our tour of Great Britain. Nestled among quaint English gardens and overlooking Lake Windermere, the country house was a traditional mansion once owned by children’s author and illustrator Beatrix Potter. It was built in 1879 as a summer holiday home for a wealthy mill owner who rented the house out to friends, including the Potter family.
One the of most beloved children’s books of all time, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, was written by Beatrix Potter in 1902. Between 1902 and 1913, she frequently stayed at the Lindeth Howe House, and it was there that she illustrated both her Timmy Tiptoes and Pigling Bland stories.
After the death of her father in 1915, Beatrix Potter bought the Lindeth Howe House for her mother, Helen Potter to live in. Both she and her mother had fallen in love with the property during their previous stays. Beatrix sold the house in 1933 after Helen died.
Today Lindeth Howe Country House is a 4-star hotel with 34 distinctive bedrooms, a comfortable dining room and beautiful gardens. The lounge and bar area maintain the Beatrix Potter influence, and copies of correspondence, original photos and prints of her books are included in the unique décor of this lovely hotel.

Sounds like great memories! It rained a lot while we were there, but still gorgeous!

We used to stay there a lot, usually around Easter time but occasionally later in the year. Had everything from a heatwave (75 in April) to snow. And lots of rain! A beautiful part of England in any weather, apart from the day we had to replace a broken fan belt in the midst of a torrential downpour, with no cover!

That’s really interesting about the house. How cool she was able to buy something she loved. The lake district of England has always looked so beautiful. Someday I’d love to visit.

Love the book and this place. I love daydreaming in nature. Now if I could only figure out how to do it all day long.

The decor of the Country House looks as whimsical as the world of Peter Rabbit. But those gardens – oh my. The foreground in your first photo almost overshadows the beauty of the rainbow beyond.

I couldn’t agree more. The decor was a joy, but the gardens were splendid to be in and to look out on. We had an amazing view from our window. I could have spent weeks here.
