I sure miss the times I kept my grandchildren when they were little! They were with me a couple of days a week until they started school. Our favorite thing, weather permitting, was to take a walk on the trail behind my house. We would spend hours a day exploring the wonders of nature. We’d leave endless trails of wild berries for the birds and nut kernels for the squirrels. We’d roll hedge apples down the path to see whose would go the farthest, and collect rocks to throw into the creek.
My grandson in particular loved delving into the mysteries and treasures of the shallow creek. Crawdads, toads, and moss-covered rocks… it was the perfect place to play. I remember one day sitting on the creek bank when my little guy asked why the water was blue in some places and brown in others.
“Well, Sweetie,” I explained, “on a still day like today, the water is like a mirror reflecting what’s above it. Where it looks blue, the sky is above it. And where it looks brown, something above it is either creating a shadow, or it’s brown… like the trunk of that tree over there.” He was fascinated when he realized he was seeing reflections, which prompted an array of further questions.
I don’t often get a chance to “teach” him things anymore, but it is my hope that his teachers entice him with equally fascinating information, and continually wet the sponge that is his inquisitive mind.

Beautiful post gi ving such strong feeling of nature. Equally strong of the bond between you and your grandson. He will not forget those exciting days he spent with you and experienced the wonder of nature. That is embedded deep within him.

i know what mean missing the grandkids. Ours was when they went to work as we had them all holidays and then nothing as they did their own activities. That was when we started travelling in our caravan.
