We don’t go downtown very often, and when we do, we sometimes find ourselves in places we’d rather avoid. Graffiti once made me uneasy; I associated it with neglect and unsavory areas. I have learned to distinguish graffiti from street art, and I’ve come to appreciate the creativity and skill behind large-scale urban painting.
Just before the holidays, we set out to visit what was described as a “food and drink gallery” tucked inside an old warehouse downtown.
As we approached, the area felt increasingly uninviting. The alley leading in was covered in graffiti.
But once we reached the parking lot, the sprawls were less chaotic and more intentional.
Less graffiti and more art.
And just around the corner, we were greeted by lively, colorful facades that felt warm and welcoming. The gallery itself was unique, cozy, and delightful.
Looks can be deceiving.

Street art can be incredibly beautiful, transforming dull urban spaces with vibrant colours and bringing art to everyone in unexpected places like alleys and underpasses. Even smaller towns I have noticed, have taken on the street art craze, and some of it is absolutely amazing in color, scope and realism! I have NO artist ability, so I don’t known how they do it! Take care

I’ve been meaning to do a blog post about urban outside art. I see so much of it especially in citities but not always in urban places. There’s a down up on Lake Superior, starts with an A…can’t remember it’s name, that is FULL of beautiful murals. There are a few around here, and down in Ann Arbor too. I need to get out and capture them. Thanks for the inspiration.

Yes, I urge you to get out and find some art! It seems to be everywhere these days. I love when a group gets together to saturate a certain area with their art. Best of luck with your photos!
