My husband and I stumbled upon Lone Elm Park in Olathe, Kansas on a lazy winter afternoon. It turned out to be a “walk in the park” (meaning easy and effortless) to wander through this quiet piece of prairie and reflect on events that sparked our nation’s westward expansion over two hundred years ago.
The park was built on land once known as the Lone Elm Campground. In 1821, and for decades after, this site served as a rendezvous point for those traveling along the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails. As the first campground west of the Missouri River, it was a popular stop used by thousands of pioneers including folk hero Kit Carson. Wagon ruts and other artifacts remain by the creek that once provided necessary water for weary travelers.
And because today’s Ragtag Daily Prompt is “reunion”, let me suggest this spot as a perfect location for a family gathering or class reunion.
