Old houses, I thought, do not belong to people ever, not really, people belong to them. ~Gladys Taber

We wander through old streets, and pause before the age stricken houses; and, strange to say, the magic past lights them up. ~Grace King

  1. I recognized the first photo immediately, from the region of Cologne, Germany. My wife and I took a Viking cruise down the Rhine River a couple of years ago and this house was included in one of the guided tours. There is a wonderful chapel in the back gardens as well.

    1. That’s exactly where the photo is from! We took our Viking Rhine River cruise in 2019, and did the Bruhl UNESCO Palaces tour, which took us to this Hunting Lodge. It was our busiest day – we did the included walking tour of Cologne in the morning, the Palaces tour in the afternoon, and the Beer Tour in Old Town Cologne that evening! A LONG day, but a great one… and a great cruise as well!

  2. Bruhl – that’s it! We were on the cruise ship that left Amsterdam in late May, arriving in Basel several days into June. We added time in Amsterdam and Lucerne. Truly one of the nicest trips we’ve ever taken. The middle Rhine region was spectacular.

    1. Sounds exactly like what we did except we didn’t add time in Lucerne, having already seen that area. We did the pre-extension in Amsterdam on May 20 and arrived in Basel on May 30. We were on the LOFN and loved it!
