I remember wanting to play the piano simply because my mother did. I would listen while she played and long to lose myself in music just like she did. So, I taught myself to play by stumbling through her impressive collection of popular sheet music. Like clockwork, I would practice every day after school because the moment my father got home from work, our television was on for the night. One day he came home early and found me playing “In the Still of the Night.” He listened, then he said “Bravo! When did you learn to do that?”

I wish it had been something profound, like “Children accomplish great things when their parents aren’t looking”, but it was probably more like “After school, Daddy.”

Didn’t you do well? Hopefully, he delays switching on the telly for a moment or two!

He would usually get home just in time for the 6:00 News, but on this particular day he was home early… so, yes the TV waited. Thanks so much for the comment!

For me, the sound of a piano or violin can’t be beat when it comes to music.
