This is one of the most recognized lighthouses in the world. Do you know where it is? It is Peggy’s Point Lighthouse, located in Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia.

Peggy’s Cove has all the charm of the Maritimes wrapped up in one small package. First and foremost, it has an iconic lighthouse,
and the sights and sounds of a quaint fishing village: moored boats in assorted sizes and wharves scattered with lobster traps, bait barrels, netting, and rope;

Weathered houses dot the inner harbor, reflections float in rippling water, sea birds argue overhead like children, but the locals are as friendly as can be.

Surround the colorful village with rocky shores, breathtaking landscape, brisk salty air, and the obvious power of the sea… and there you have it! Picture-perfect Peggy’s Cove!

The classic red and white lighthouse sits atop a massive granite rock formation and has guided ships and boats through the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean since 1915. It stands 50 feet tall and has a distinctive octagonal shape. The lantern emits a white light which is visible for several nautical miles.

The name “Peggy’s Cove” is said to have come from the sole survivor of a shipwreck in the area. The woman’s name was Margaret, but she was known as “Peggy.” She settled in the cove, giving it her name. The solid rock groupings in this narrow inlet protect the cove from the raging sea, but they are dangerous! One or two visitors a year are swept away despite numerous signs of warning.

Peggy’s Cove was my favorite stop on our recent trip to the Maritime Provinces of Canada, but there were plenty of other fun destinations worth sharing, and I will!

The colors in these photos are striking, whether chairs, ropes, boats, or lighthouse. I love the image towards the end of the rocky outcropping surrounding a grassy knoll. I can’t decide whether the knoll should be part of a golf course or have a flock of sheep on it 🙂

Funny thing about that photo… it’s the only one of the bunch that I took out the bus window! There were no sheep around that I know of (but I agree it looks like there should be). There was a golf course in the vicinity, though! 🙂

Yes, the vibrant scenery feels perfect for a golf course or grazing sheep.

it looked so familiar I thought I had been there, but in reality I have not. Rather, I’m taking a photography class and the instructor is from Nova Scotia and she has images of this lighthouse that I have seen.
